I'm going though my backlog of people I've been following and I came across Mosse. Remember these? Richard Mosse had a brilliant idea when photographing Congo, infrared film. I've never been very interested in his work until these images came out. His journalism style felt standard and frankly, boring. These images changed how I feel about him.

The David Goldblatt exhibition currently on exhibit at The Jewish Museum is not getting enough exposure. The exhibition includes a decent time line for those who know little or nothing about South African history. This time line also coincides with Goldblatt's life, which I think is an interesting way to examine the stories he tells.

Retratos Pintados is an exhibition that closes at Yossi Milo September 18. I highly recommend you take a look at these hand painted photographs from Brazil. They are like nothing I have ever seen.

Charles Moore passed away on March 15, 2010. His photographs played an important role in the Civil Rights movement.

It's been a while, but I'm back.

Have you seen the William Kentridge show yet at MoMA? This is the best exhibition I have (I'm going to be bold and say it) ever seen before. There is a wonderful opera piece that he created with a puppet theater of sorts, that has me going back every day at lunch. I've spent over 6 hours in the last two weeks revisiting the exhibition, and I'm not tired yet. Basically, what I'm saying to you is, go to MoMA and see what William Kentridge is all about.

In September this year over five days, Platon, the New Yorker staff photographer got many of the world’s leaders to sit for him while they were here for a meeting of the United Nations. You can check out all the portraits on the New Yorker’s website. Each photograph come with audio commentary by Platon.

I remember first seeing Leslie Hewitt's work at the 2008 Whitney Biennial (instillation shot above.) I honestly can't remember my first reaction when seeing this work, but it was the only work in the Biennial I came back to see again. There is something incredibly chalenging about Make it Plain that had me coming back to revisit the intillation.

Riffs on Real time, featured above can be seen at the New Photography 2009 exhibition at MOMA.

Hewitt studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, the Yale University School of Art, and at New York University, where she was a Clark Fellow in the Africana and Visual Culture Studies program.

J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere is a Nigerian born photographer who first started making pictures in 1950. In 1967 he joined the Nigeriean Arts Council and documented Nigerian cultural heritage. He has an opening this Thursday 12/17/09 at L. Parker Stephenson Photographs on Madison Ave. & 66th St.

Malick Sidibé's work will also be featured Thursday night at L. Parker Stephenso n Photographs. Sidibé documented the postcolonial youth in Mali during the late 60's. He would attend all of the happening events around Bamako, the capitol, and print into the night, a selection of images that clients would then come in the morning and pick out their favorites. Very similar to modern day photographs taken before you enter popular tourists destinations such as the empire state building, sears tower, or a holiday cruise.

Sidibé is, hands down, my favorite photographer.

I can't really find words that explain how I feel about this work, so I am posting Chris Jordan's words below. Absolutely haunting.

"These photographs of albatross chicks were made just a few weeks ago on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world's most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent."

Have you heard of POC ( Piece of Cake ) yet? I don't know very much about this initiative, but it was started by Charles Freger, who I first heard about the other night when I went to see his and Bill Sullivan's Exhibition at Caption Gallery. If someone could explain POC better to me, I would appreciate it, but its collective members are made up of some of my favorite contemporary photographers, new friends, old friends, and past teachers. The list includes Ben Gest, Kelli Connell, Bill Sullivan, Amy Stein, Brian Ulrich, and more.

Funny story about the above picture... I know the man sitting on the chair. I met him in Namibia a few years ago at a town meeting in Windhoek. The Ova-Hereros are some of the warmest people I have ever met, and they invited my fellow travelers and I in for discussion and dinner.

A war and resulting mass genocide of the Hereros in 1904 by the Germans, left these people with very little, and no recognition from the German government for their actions. It wasn't until the 100 year anniversary when Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul , apologized for the genocide on behalf of the German people.

Despite a history of oppression, the individuals I met during my time in Namibia are still making strong moves to be heard. This story is an important one in history, and I am incredibly impressed with the way Freger approached these subjects

Seba Kurtis is an Argentinian photographer who uses his personal experiences of being an illegal immigrant in his current endeavours. The above works are from a project entitled A Few Days More.

Egyptians are increasingly making the trek to Italy for better jobs and opportunities. The Italian government is making this already difficult trek harder, by limiting Egyptians access to Libya, where the travel to Europe is cheaper and quicker. Remittance is the third largest source of revenue in Egypt, and the new Italian laws are in place to prevent the Arabs from moving in.

I recently lost a close friend of mine, and I have been frustrated with the moments I can't remember with her. I have been battling with the memory loss, looking at photographs of her, reading letters we used to send each other, paging though my negatives and journal entries, and collecting what I have in order to preserve her. These works by Clang examine that fear we have of forgetting someone we love after they pass.

African cane rats infested with maggots, African yams (dioscorea), Andean potatoes, Bangladeshi cucurbit plants, bush meat, cherimoya fruit, curry leaves (murraya), dried orange peels, fresh eggs, giant African snail, impala skull cap, jackfruit seeds, June plum, kola nuts, mango, okra, passion fruit, pig nose, pig mouths, pork, raw poultry (chicken), South American pig head, South American tree tomatoes, South Asian lime infected with citrus canker, sugar cane (poaceae), uncooked meats, unidentified sub tropical plant in soil.

All items in the photograph were seized from the baggage of passengers arriving in the U.S. at JFK Terminal 4 from abroad over a 48-hour period. All seized items are identified, dissected, and then either ground up or incinerated. JFK processes more international passengers than any other airport in the United States.
